30 Day Writing Challenge: Day 25
Day 25—Write a story about ‘What the Neighbours Saw.’
“It’s so cold out,” Martha complained. “I hate the cold: it makes my joints swell.” She walked over to the bedroom window and looked outside.
“Well then, I guess we’ll have to stay inside and watch movies all day,” Edward replied. “No better day to spend curled up in bed then a day like today.”
Martha smiled and began to turn away from the window. A flash of movement stopped her. She looked in the direction of their neighbour’s house and jumped.
“Oh, Jeez!” the cried.
“What’s wrong?” Edward asked.
“Oh, little Tommy has a Halloween mask on,” Martha replied. “He must have saw me looking out the window and decided to scared me.”
Edward laughed. “Come over hear and warm me up,” he said. “Let’s find something to watch.”
Martha climbed back into bed. They ordered a movie and began to watch.
Half way through the movie they heard a loud bang from outside.
“What was that?” Martha asked.
“I don’t know,” Edward said. “Give me a moment.” He climbed out of bed and hurried over to the window. “Looks like a car backfired. And Tommy is still trying to scare people. He’s got a clown mask on now.”
“Isn’t he precious?” Martha said. “I think a clown mask is much better than the one before. Some sort of mask from one of those horror movies. Not something appropriate for a kid that young.”
“Yeah, but what are we going to do about it?” Edward said. He climbed back into bed and they continued to watch the movie.
Edward awoke with a start. He had fallen asleep during the second movie. It was now late afternoon. Martha was asleep beside him. Bright lights were coming through the window.
He got out of bed and walked over to look outside. An ambulance was sitting outside the neighbours house. Edward hurried down the stairs and went out into the cold.
“John,” he called out to his neighbour. “What’s wrong?”
“It’s Tommy,” John said. “He caught pneumonia last night. He just went down hill suddenly. He went unconscious.”
Edward started. “Really?” he said. “He seemed fine earlier today.”
“What are you talking about?” John asked. “He’s been in bed all day.”
